Webb1 juni 2007 · The unit of measurement used in MS is the unified atomic mass unit (u); defined as 1/12 the mass of a 12 C atom (1 u equals 1.66054029 × 10 –27 kg). In other words, the mass of a 12 C atom is exactly 12 u. This selection is simply a convention and, interestingly, before 1961, 16 O was used for the same purpose.
